In Maputo, Mozambique, a significant agreement was signed between the governments of Mozambique and China, aimed at establishing a modern National Surgical Center within Maputo Central Hospital, the largest healthcare facility in the country. This collaboration is included in a larger initiative to improve Mozambique’s public health system.
The new surgical facility, spanning approximately 20,300 square meters, will have a capacity of 475 beds. It will house various departments, including emergency services, diagnostic and technical units, inpatient wards, logistical support areas, and administrative offices. The construction of the center will be a major contribution to the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Ivan Manhica, the permanent secretary of Mozambique’s Ministry of Health, shared that the center’s creation will enhance the country’s ability to offer specialized healthcare and help address the current challenges in medical services. This progress is a significant step forward for the public healthcare system of the nation.
Manhica remarked, “The National Surgical Center will serve as more than just a building; it will be a beacon of hope, ensuring that patients not only receive treatment but leave in a better state of health.”
The institution is also supposed to enhance general access to quality healthcare in Mozambique and address the shortage of specialist medical services.
In the health sector, China and Mozambique have had a long-standing relationship. Since 1976, China has provided extensive support, including medical aid, infrastructure projects, and training for healthcare professionals. To date, 25 Chinese medical teams have been dispatched to assist Mozambique.
