Joburg Set to Get a New Dome

Johannesburg is gearing up for a major shake-up in its entertainment scene with announcing a new “Dome” venue set to open in Nasrec in January 2025.

The news, which will surely excite those who remember the iconic Dome in Northriding, comes from a collaboration between Stadium Management South Africa, Live Nation, and Gearhouse South Africa.
The new Dome, located across from the FNB Stadium, promises to be one of South Africa’s largest live entertainment spaces, boasting a capacity of over 10,500.

The venue aims to be a hub for both local and international artists, with a focus on genres like Afrobeats, Amapiano, Dance, Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B. Already, the venue has secured its first major act, with Nigerian Afrobeats star Tems scheduled to perform on March 20, 2025.

But The Dome isn’t just about music. The venue, entirely designed, produced, and constructed in South Africa, will also offer over 6,000 square metres of multi-purpose space. This means it can host a variety of events, including conferences, product launches, banquets, and exhibitions.

The partners behind The Dome are emphasizing their commitment to boosting the local economy and investing in South Africa’s live events sector. Beyond the big-name events, The Dome plans to launch community projects, support local businesses, and create jobs.

Justin Van Wyk, CEO at Live Nation South Africa, believes The Dome will fill a crucial gap in the market. “The Dome fills a critical gap in South Africa’s live entertainment scene, creating a unique space that will support pan-African talent,” he said. “The venue will provide new opportunities to connect emerging and established artists with a new demographic of South African fans.”

Bertie Grobbelaar, CEO at Stadium Management South Africa, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader vision. “This collaboration… reflects our shared vision to not only host world-class events but also empower local talent, boost economic growth, and create a vibrant cultural hub in Johannesburg and the Gauteng Province,” he stated.

Ofer Lapid and Nasser Abbas, Joint CEOs at Gearhouse South Africa, expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership. “As the Gearhouse Group, we are proud and excited to be partnering with Live Nation South Africa and Stadium Management South Africa on this new venture,” they said. “The collaboration is fuelled by our shared vision, passion, and a commitment to service excellence, and we’re excited about the opportunities this venue will create.”
