Gqeberha, South Africa, 02 October 2024 – A landmark project in the automotive industry was unveiled today as the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Honourable Nonkqubela Pieters, officially launched the Orion Engineered Carbons (Orion) Tank Farm Project in Zone 7 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The project, which broke ground in April 2022, marks a significant milestone in the region’s industrial development. It underscores the successful collaboration between Coega Development Corporation, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, Transnet National Ports Authority, and Orion, ensuring the sustainability of jobs in the automotive and tyre manufacturing industries.

“This project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about preserving jobs and fostering economic growth,” said Mr. Themba Koza, Coega’s Acting Chief Executive Officer. “It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential of the Coega SEZ to drive industrial development.”

The Eastern Cape, a key player in South Africa’s automotive sector, has faced challenges in recent times. The announcement of potential layoffs at Mercedes-Benz highlighted the need for innovative solutions to ensure the sector’s future viability.

“We are committed to creating a future-ready automotive sector,” said MEC Pieters. “This project is a tangible example of our efforts to support the industry and safeguard jobs.”

The Orion Tank Farm, a state-of-the-art facility, will play a crucial role in the supply chain for the country’s tyre industry. It enables the transportation and storage of black feedstock oil, a key ingredient in the production of carbon black.

“We are proud to contribute to the growth of the automotive sector in South Africa,” said Mr. Corning Painter, Orion CEO. “This project demonstrates our commitment to sustainable operations and our belief in the potential of the Coega SEZ.”

The project has had a significant socio-economic impact, creating over 200 jobs during construction and supporting local businesses. It also secured 120 jobs at the Orion plant, thanks to funding from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.

The Orion Tank Farm is a strategic addition to the Coega SEZ, enhancing its appeal as an investment destination. It offers essential services to existing and future businesses, solidifying the region’s position as a leader in industrial development.

By supporting the automotive and tyre manufacturing industry, the OEC Tank Farm contributes to the sustainability and competitiveness of South Africa’s automotive sector.
