Infrastructure Upgrade Boosts Limpopo Community Safety

The Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo Province is advancing crucial infrastructure development, successfully upgrading a four-kilometre stretch of gravel road in Lebowakgomo to a tar surface. The project, vital for the upliftment of the residential area, included the installation of new stormwater management infrastructure, supplied by industry specialist Rocla. This ongoing initiative is set to deliver safer, more reliable roads, walkways, and essential services for the local community.

Ditlou Suppliers and Services, the project contractor, emphasised the strategic significance of the upgrade. Karel Komape, Project Manager for Ditlou, noted that infrastructure maintenance is crucial for uplifting communities historically reliant on deteriorating road and drainage systems. Komape stressed the need for infrastructural components to meet programme standards, a requirement he confirmed Rocla’s Interlocking Joint (IJ) stormwater pipes satisfied.

Rocla provided a substantial supply of 1,037 x 100D standard 2.44m long Interlocking Joint stormwater pipes, with diameters ranging from 450mm up to 1200mm. Matthews Ntjie, Sales Consultant for Rocla, Polokwane, affirmed the company’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions, regardless of project scale. Initially unaware of the full extent of replacement piping needed, Rocla swiftly revised its internal quantity requirements and collaborated with its manufacturing plant to meet the contractor’s deadlines without compromising other customer commitments, a logistical challenge they successfully achieved.

Ntjie elaborated on the technical specifications of the product, confirming the IJ pipe’s specific design for stormwater applications. The male/female type joint is formed within the pipe wall, which prevents widening and ensures constant external dimensions. The joint aids in centring the pipe during laying and is typically sealed with a sealant or membrane. For applications demanding enhanced water tightness, Rocla supplies an external rubber collar to prevent soil particle ingress, providing a cost-effective alternative to more expensive rubber ring joint pipes where groundwater exclusion is necessary. Komape concluded by praising the locally manufactured, high-quality stormwater pipes supplied by Rocla. He confirmed the timely delivery kept the project on schedule, indicating a strong likelihood of future collaboration with the supplier.
