Johannesburg: The 17th annual South African Construction Awards (SACA) recently illuminated the glamorous Emperor’s Palace, honoring the exceptional contributions of individuals and organizations within the construction sector.
The event, often dubbed the “Oscars” of the industry, attracted a stellar crowd, including prominent figures such as Dr. Collen Mashawana and his brother, Cecil Mashawana. This year’s finalists showcased a diverse range of projects, from infrastructure to healthcare facilities, highlighting the industry’s commitment to progress and sustainability.
Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi delivered a powerful keynote address, celebrating the resilience and achievements of women in construction. She acknowledged the challenges faced by women in this male-dominated industry, including threats and extortion. Kubayi expressed admiration for the courage and determination of women who have persevered to make significant contributions to the sector.
“We honor those who have endured the pain and suffering of sustaining their businesses,” she said, referencing the stories shared at the recent Indaba in Kimberley.
The SACA recognized excellence across various categories, including Green Builder of the Year, Construction Project Manager of the Year, and Best Construction Company. A special focus was placed on honoring women-owned organizations that have demonstrated innovation and resilience.
The event served as a platform to acknowledge the industry’s evolution and the vital role of women in shaping its future. Kubayi’s call for unity and support resonated with attendees, inspiring current and future generations to strive for excellence in the construction sector.
