Rocla Honoured for Innovation in Sewer Construction

Rocla, a leading precast concrete manufacturer, has been recognized for its contribution to a cutting-edge sewer project in Cape Town. The company received a prestigious Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) Award for Excellence in Engineering for its role in supplying HDPE Lined Steel Band Jacking Pipes for the Montague Gardens bulk outfall sewer project.

This project presented a unique set of challenges, requiring the development of specialized pipes to work in conjunction with advanced micro-tunnelling technology. Rocla, in collaboration with CSV Construction, successfully designed and manufactured these pipes to meet the stringent requirements of the project, which involved the use of innovative AVN (Slurry) machines.

“This was a project unlike any we have encountered before,” said Muhammad Bodhania, Rocla Technical Executive. “The demands placed upon us by the micro-tunnelling process necessitated meticulous design and manufacturing.”

The existing 4 km-long sewer system in Montague Gardens, dating back 50 to 60 years, was showing signs of significant deterioration. The new project involved installing approximately 3,800 meters of 970mm and 1000mm diameter pipes, along with 300 meters of 1350mm diameter pipes.

The use of micro-tunnelling technology was crucial for this project, minimizing disruption to the surrounding area and allowing for precise installation even in challenging ground conditions. This method involves the use of specialized machines that excavate the ground and simultaneously install the pipes, guided by advanced computer systems.

“Micro-tunnelling offers numerous advantages, particularly in urban environments,” said Bodhania. “It minimizes traffic disruption, allows for construction in various ground conditions, and reduces the environmental impact.”

Rocla’s commitment to innovation and technical excellence was instrumental in the success of this project. The company’s ability to design and manufacture customized solutions, coupled with its extensive experience in the precast concrete industry, enabled it to deliver the high-quality pipes required for this challenging undertaking.

This award from the CMA serves as a testament to Rocla’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of precast concrete technology and its commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions for critical infrastructure projects.

Rocla, part of the Infrastructure Specialist Group (ISG) of companies, is a leading manufacturer of precast concrete products in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. With over 107 years of experience, Rocla has a strong track record of delivering high-quality, innovative solutions for a wide range of infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and water and wastewater systems.

The Infrastructure Specialist Group (ISG) is a leading provider of infrastructure solutions in Southern Africa. The group comprises many well-established companies, including Rocla, Technicrete, and others, each with a strong track record of delivering high-quality, innovative, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
