Durban – KwaZulu-Natal is witnessing a significant infrastructure transformation as construction projects valued at a staggering R25 billion get underway on the N2 and N3 highways. The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has confirmed that nine packages are currently under construction along these vital routes.
Dudley Mbambo, acting regional manager of the Sanral Eastern Region, highlighted the progress made since the initiative began in 2021. “The N2/N3 program is well on track,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of these projects in improving connectivity and safety in the province.
One of the most significant projects is the R1.2 billion KwaMashu Interchange to uMdloti upgrade, which commenced in August 2021. This project is set for completion in the last quarter of 2025 and includes the construction of a much-needed M41 pedestrian bridge.
“Safety is paramount,” Mbambo stressed. “The pedestrian bridge will ensure the safety of residents who cross the M41 highway daily.”
The EB Cloete Interchange, also known as Spaghetti Junction, is another major undertaking. This R5 billion project aims to increase the capacity of the interchange and adjacent sections of the N2 and N3. With a current completion rate of 15%, the project has already generated significant economic benefits for local businesses.
“The upgraded interchange will provide additional lanes, reducing traffic congestion and improving travel times for commuters,” Mbambo explained.
The N3 upgrade between Key Ridge and Hammarsdale is another key project. Valued at R4.57 billion, this upgrade will address safety concerns and improve traffic flow on this challenging stretch of highway.
Mbambo emphasized Sanral’s commitment to transformation and local economic development. “We are prioritizing the involvement of small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in our projects,” he said. “This includes subcontracting opportunities and job creation for local communities.”
The N2 and N3 upgrades represent a significant investment in KwaZulu-Natal’s infrastructure. These projects will not only improve connectivity but also stimulate economic growth and create jobs in the region. As construction progresses, the positive impact of these initiatives will become increasingly evident.
