Kuruman Desert Oasis: New Mall Set to Transform Town

The arid landscape of the Northern Cape is set to bloom with the arrival of a new shopping centre. Segonyana Mall, a 11,000-square-metre development by the Moolman Group, officially broke ground this week, marking a significant milestone for the town of Kuruman.

Scheduled to open its doors in November 2025, the mall promises to revitalize the local economy and offer residents a much-needed boost in convenience and lifestyle options.

“This is more than just bricks and mortar,” said Pieter Beyers from the Moolman Group. “It’s about creating a space that serves the people of Kuruman.”

The mall, strategically located at the corner of Tsening Road and Bree Street, will be anchored by major retailers like Shoprite and Boxer. A diverse range of stores, including fashion brands like Mr Price, Pep, and Markhams, will cater to the needs of local residents. Essential services, such as Capitec Bank and Arrie Nel Pharmacy, will ensure easy access to everyday necessities.

The development will also generate significant employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and upon its completion. This influx of jobs will undoubtedly provide a much-needed economic boost to the region.

A Desert Oasis in the Making

Kuruman, nestled within the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, is situated in a region rich in natural resources, particularly manganese, a critical component in steel and electric vehicle production. However, the town’s economic landscape is also significantly influenced by its proximity to Kathu, a thriving mining town home to Sishen Mine, Kumba Iron Ore’s flagship operation.

Kathu, with its high-income earners and skilled workforce, exerts a strong economic pull on the surrounding areas, including Kuruman. This influx of wealth contributes to the relatively high per capita expenditure within the Gamagara Local Municipality, which encompasses Kathu. According to Stats SA, Gamagara boasts the highest per capita expenditure in the country, exceeding R23,000 per resident.

The Segonyana Mall is strategically positioned to capitalize on this regional economic activity. Its convenient location, coupled with a focus on security and accessibility, is expected to attract both national brands and local businesses, further solidifying Kuruman’s position as a regional hub.

A Beacon of Hope for the Future

The development of the Segonyana Mall signifies a new era for Kuruman. It represents a significant investment in the town’s future, providing modern infrastructure and a much-needed boost to its social and economic fabric.

The mall is expected to become a focal point for the community, offering a safe and enjoyable shopping experience for residents. As construction progresses, anticipation is building within Kuruman, with residents eagerly awaiting the arrival of this exciting new development. The Segonyana Mall is poised to transform Kuruman into a vibrant and thriving hub in the heart of the Northern Cape.
