A Milestone in Road Infrastructure
AfriSam and Rumdel Construction have been recognised for their exceptional work on the N3 highway upgrade between Ashburton and Lynnfield Park in KwaZulu-Natal. The project, which saw the implementation of cutting-edge Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology, was honoured at the Construction World Best Projects 2024 Awards.
The collaboration between the two companies resulted in a landmark achievement in South African road infrastructure. By utilising high-quality construction materials and innovative techniques, the project team successfully delivered a durable and sustainable solution that sets new standards for the industry.
A Focus on Sustainability and Community
AfriSam’s role in the project was pivotal. The company supplied over 50,000 cubic metres of readymix concrete, specifically designed to meet the rigorous demands of the CRCP. The concrete mix incorporated AfriSam’s 42.5R composite cement, which not only enhanced the strength and durability of the pavement but also minimised the project’s environmental impact.
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. AfriSam implemented various measures to reduce waste and conserve resources. Recycled concrete was used as an interlayer beneath the CRCP, while water usage was optimised during the concrete mixing process.
The project also generated significant employment opportunities for local communities. Over 680 individuals were employed, with five subcontractors dedicated solely to the CRCP work. This commitment to social upliftment highlights the positive impact that well-executed infrastructure projects can have on local economies.
A Testament to Quality and Innovation
The N3 highway upgrade serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation. By combining advanced technology with a focus on sustainability and community development, AfriSam and Rumdel Construction have delivered a project that will benefit South Africa for years to come.
